-->Helping homeless pets

Catherine, Norah and Alex are pictured here with GHS founder, Michelle. The girls pooled their resources and raised $1,335 for Georgia Humane assist in helping animals in need. GHS is very proud of these girls and others who volunteer to help those who cannot speak for themselves.
Catherine, Norah and Alex have learned at an early age the joy that comes from giving of oneself. Thank you, girls. Your gift will be used to investigate animal cruelty in Georgia and care for special needs dogs and cats.

Fighting Animal Cruelty

Each year in Georgia hundreds of animal cruelty/abuse cases go ignored simply because many counties in Georgia do not have the resources to to see that these cases are prosecuted. GHS has been instrumental in assisting areas that need help with cruelty cases and seeing to it that people who abuse, mistreat and neglect animals are brought to justice and punished for their crimes.
Too many dogs, cats and horses are abused and neglected in GA and although there are laws that prohibit these cruel acts, many areas need . . .more

UPDATE: Beauty is all better - is running and climbing stairs in her new forever home. Very happy tails!
Beauty is getting better! She is standing more and gradually gaining strength in her hind leg. She still sits often but, Beauty has come a long way from being almost killed first by a car then in the shelter less than two months ago. A little more patience . . . a little more time then GHS will find her a loving forever home. Thanks to all who contributed to Beauty's care. What a Beautiful smile!

Gifts for homeless pets
Katie recently turned 10 years old. She asked her friends to give her presents that could be used for the homeless pets in Georgia. As a result of her making that request, she raised $75 in cash plus many items gifts for both dogs and cats. Thanks Katie!
GHS is very proud of the children and volunteers who come forward putting the needs of less fortunate animals before their personal wants. Adoption fees alone do not cover the cost of treating some of the animals who have special medical needs or are less "desireable" to the public. Contributions and volunteers are what enable GHS to make a difference in the lives of those dogs and cats and also in the lives of the human animals that love them.

Martial arts and helping the helpless
Six year old Evan completed a community service project for his martial arts class. Evan chose Georgia Humane to benefit from his efforts to give back. He raised over $200 in cash and numerous items for both dogs and cats from our wish list.
We are very proud of Evan for helping the homeless pets in Georgia and for being a friend to the humane society. Thank you so much, Evan. Woof! Meow!

This sweet girl was hit by a car
Michelle received the following email from a metro shelter, "We have not received any inquiries on this dog. She has to find rescue today. She cannot be humanely held past today. She cannot stand and uses her front legs to scoot around her kennel. Please contact me TODAY (Wednesday, March 16) if you would like to rescue this dog."
So "Beauty" is at our house and will visit the vet tomorrow. She is as cute as her picture. And even though she cannot stand her tail is going a mile a minute when you smile at her. She loves to be loved on. Beauty will require surgery, the extent of which is not known yet. You can be part of this rescue by contributing to with her care. Click here for more information about Beauty.
UPDATE: Beauty had her surgery yesterday (March 18th) and came to our house this afternoon. She did very well at the vet. She did not even nip at the vet when he thought she would due to the pain. It will take some time for her to recover from the surgery and to re-learn how to use her rear legs. GHS will be looking for a very special home for Beauty when she recovers. Check here or Facebook for more updates.
UPDATE: Beauty is getting used to her "wheelchair". This is intended for temporary use to help in her recovery. In the future, the "wheelchair" will be used to assist other dogs with special needs that enter the GHS program. Beauty enjoys being outside.

GHS happy tails on the Animal Rescue Site

Animal rescue is an emotional endeavor. And all GHS volunteers like others in the rescue community are subject to compassion fatigue. The encouragement of supporters and stories like these build everyone up to continue being a strong voice for those without a voice. Click on their pictures and check out these foster authored stories online about Topher, the therapy dog and Matilda, a Parvo survivor

Young volunteer and future animal rescuer
Christa had a birthday and decided to donate all of her money to help the animals. Christa also comes to adoptions with her mom on the weekends to help with caring for the animals. When we have puppies she will get in the cage with them and play to so they are socialized with kids. She is a great young volunteer and has said she wants to be an animal rescuer when she grows up.

It's a new trend in giving
Pictured here are Caitlin and her friend Reese both 8 years old who recently asked their friends to donate items for homeless pets in lieu of birthday toys for themselves. They collected toys, treats, leashes and many other great items for GHS foster dogs and cats. Thank you so much for having such huge hearts at your age to put others before yourself.
Also, thanks to your parents for teaching that giving is much better than receiving.

One of many legacies for Garrett Misener
A Marine lost his life today defending our freedoms.

It is so easy to get wrapped up in helping voiceless animals . . . and so easy to not be mindful of those in harms way daily defending our freedom to rescue those animals in need. There was a reminder today that hit very close to home. Chris, a GHS foster lost a friend today whom he had served with in the military. Garrett Misener is his name and he lost his life today in Afghanistan.
A couple in California had contacted GHS about rescuing a senior Sheperd mix who was on the kill list. Today Chris rescued the dog and in his friend's honor named him Garrett. As you can tell from the fuzzy picture, Garrett like his name sake is an active guy.
Our heart goes out to the Misener family of Nashville. Please keep in mind Garrett Misener and all those who risk their lives daily so we can continue to do what we all do . . . working to make this a more humane world.

The next generation of animal advocates
Elizabeth Marr used her birthday to help others
Elizabeth used the occasion of her birthday to raise $181 to help animals in need. It is so encouraging to see young ones stepping forward on behalf of those without a voice. The money will assist with the vetting and care of rescued companion animals. Elizabeth is pictured with Michelle holding SAndy, an adoptable puppy in the GHS foster program.
GHS takes in a significant number of special needs dogs. The vet bills for such dogs typically exceeds money from adoption fee. Contributions rasied by Elizabeth and other young ones help GHS cover some of these extra expenses.

Thanks Alex and Norah!
A birthday party about the gift of life

For the second year, Norah Wagoner used her birthday party to raise funds to help rescue pets. This year she and Alex Spinelli had a combined party and raised $880. They asked that everyone bring donations for pet rescue rather than gifts. That's Alex in purple and red . . . Norah in light green.
The money will help fund GHS's continuing work to assist local pets in need. We are inspired by these young girls putting the needs of less fortunate living beings ahead of their own wants. Thanks from all of us at GHS and from those without their own voice!
As a reminder. . .
This is a good site by ASPCA to ensure your house is pet safe from toxic elements.
Lacy - my new home

This Sunday (26th) Lacy went home. Ed, a major volunteer with Coalition to Unchain Dogs was anixous to adopt Lacy once he read her story. Her new family includes two other dogs. It's hard for us and Lacy to realize that her life was about to end less than 3 weeks ago. . . now look what a difference three short weeks can make! Thanks to all who helped and showed their support for Lacy. See more about her on the GHS blog.

Lacy - happy to be free with three legs
Lacy's operation went well. As a puppy she is running all around playing with the other dogs at her foster home awaiting adoption. She has had alot of change in her life in a short time. In spite of that she is so loving and full of life! See more about her on the GHS blog.

GHS Services that few people see
My wife just got back home (mid-afternoon) after spending her “day-off” (Sunday) helping at a fence build for Coalition to Unchained Dogs-Atlanta. Subsequently, one of the people in the area had a sick cat so meds were provided to her. Then a lady was talked into bringing her dog inside if GHS provides a crate.
All the amazing GHS volunteers do similar things. . .. helping people with the intent to benefit the animals in their care. Michelle probably will not like me posting this (but too bad, I know how to make changes to the website). This is just an example of the many services GHS regularly provides.

Lacy - a precious injured puppy

Lacy is a 6 month old American Bulldog puppy that came into Heard County Animal Control as a stray. She has a servely wounded hind leg. It appears she was caught/tied somewhere, the tie got embedded, and then she tried to chew herself free. It's awful!
We rescued her Wednesday morning and took her immediately for vet care. Her leg will have to amputated. In spite, of the mistreatmnet she has endured at this young age, she is full of kisses for those around her. Losing a leg is not going to dampen her spirits or keep her from fully enjoying her new life.
We are continuing to raise funds to cover her surgery and medical expenses. After she recuperates, we will find her a new life in a special forever home. You can be part of that new life by spreading the word and donating if you can!

Alpha - The first of Old Yeller's legacy

Alpha was rescued from DeKalb animal control on August 25, 2010. He had been in the shelter for a month and the staff was hoping someone would rescue him. One of our volunteers saw him on Petfinder and wanted him to be our first rescue in honor of Old Yeller (Jojo). He’s an 8 year old Collie and was found wandering the streets completely dehydrated. They treated him at the shelter for heat exhaustion and he managed to survive. We plan to get him healthy and look for a home that will allow him to live the remainder of his life with love and happiness. }
Alpha had his day at the spa and vet visit. He weighs 26 lbs., heart worm positive, full of hookworms and had a white blood cell count of 21,000. He needed to be saved! We will work on the most pressing issues first and then go back for further tests once we get him built up. He's super sweet and just goes with the flow. It's shocking that a dog can be this emaciated and still be standing even though it's not for long periods of time. Lisa is very good at getting weight back on a dog so she'll work very hard to get him back to a healthy weight. Stay tuned in to be updated on his progress.

Jojo and Coweta County Animal Control

Jojo, or Old Yeller as some have named him, was a 5-7 year old yellow lab who suffered unnecessarily for four days in the Coweta County Animal Control Shelter. After being taken to a vet by GHS and examined, it was determined that nothing could be done for him other than to end his suffering. So he was humanely euthanized.
Although GHS and other rescue groups have worked for years toward shelter reform in Coweta County, Jojo touched off a big public outcry both local and global. This situtation reflects a local, state and national issue that can be solved. Jojo, you did not die in vain. Below are links to the story, social media groups and petitiion drive:
